Mayo Clinic - Rochester, Minnesota
The world-renowned Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Rochester, Minnesota has been designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute; it is one of only 41 such centers so designated. The Center also has campuses in the Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona area and in Jacksonville, Florida. The Mayo Clinic is dedicated to cancer research and treatment. Doctors from around the world refer mesothelioma patients to the Mayo Clinic.
The Mayo Clinic Cancer Center sees an average of three to four new mesothelioma patients every month. This indicates the specialists at the center have extensive experience in dealing with mesothelioma. A wide range of specialists consult on suspected mesothelioma cases. The latest diagnostic tools are used, and diagnosis of mesothelioma is generally made relatively quickly at the Mayo Clinic when compared to smaller centers with less experience in mesothelioma. A care team is quickly formed and treatment frequently begins within a few days, optimizing the patient's chance for survival. Specialists in thoracic surgery, pulmonary and critical care, oncology, and pathology typically form the mesothelioma care team.
Treatment may consist of a combination of chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. This is frequently the best option for patients in Stage I pleural mesothelioma in otherwise good health. Patients who meet certain requirements may be offered experimental treatment in clinical trials.
Mayo Clinic's Thoracic Surgery department is one of the largest in the United States. Five general thoracic surgeons are on staff at the Minnesota location. Most chest surgery is performed at St. Mary's Hospital, which has 45 operating rooms and an extensive pulmonary rehabilitation department.
The Mayo Clinic Cancer Center offers a range of supportive services for patients and their families, including counseling, transportation services, concierge services, patient education, and other support. The Mayo Clinic also has a range of medical transportation available for patients who are too ill to travel by conventional means. Patients who need hospitalization in Rochester may be hospitalized in one of Mayo Clinic's three hospitals: the Rochester Methodist Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, or Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital.
