John Crane
For several decades, asbestos was an integral part of John Crane Inc.'s industrial processes. The material was incorporated into a broad range of materials such as:
- Valve packaging
- Gasket material
- Boiler lining
- Rope
- Tape
The mineral's popularity as an insulator stemmed from its superior fire and heat retardant qualities at a relatively low cost. Those who worked in John Crane factories or in the following occupations may have been exposed to the mineral on a regular basis and include the following:
- Auto mechanics
- Shipyard workers
- Railroad employees
- Boilermakers
- Plumbers
- Pipefitters
- Machinists
In some cases, asbestos inhalation occurred during the process of cleaning and scraping asbestos-containing parts during routine maintenance. Individuals working in compact or enclosed spaces such as ship compartments and garages were particularly at risk of asbestos exposure.
Asbestos Litigation
John Crane has been involved in numerous asbestos lawsuits nationwide. Some of the recent lawsuits found in favor of the plaintiff recovered amounts between $1 million (Richard Schuderer v. John Crane Inc.) and $27.5 million (Jerry Johnston v. Alfa Laval Inc.) for the mesothelioma sufferers and their families. John Crane has not yet filed for bankruptcy and remains a leading supplier of sealing products and systems.
If you have been a worker at a John Crane plant or used any of their asbestos-containing products, it is important to seek regular medical screening to monitor for signs of asbestos-related disease. The company was started in 1917 as the Crane Packing Company and primarily produced packing and gaskets. During the company's first 20 years of business, Crane established facilities throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
One of Crane's major accomplishments is the invention and manufacturing of the first automotive mechanical seal in 1939. This and other innovations were patented by Crane throughout the 1940s. After acquiring a 26-acre plot of land for their plant in 1951, Crane Packing Co. moved its headquarters from Chicago to Morton Grove, Illinois.
In 1987, Crane Packing Company changed ownerships to TI Group PLC, the same company that bought its United Kingdom facilities in the 1930s. The company purchased Crane Packing and changed its name to John Crane Inc. In 1998, the company acquired three other sealing companies including Sealol, Safematic and Flexibox while multiplying its product lines.
John Crane proceeded to increase its global presence in the years following the acquisitions. Newer additions to John Crane's product line include welded metal bellows seals, focused sealing and lubrication products and high-temperature and high-pressure cartridge seals for pipeline and refinery operations.
Today, John Crane is a subsidiary of Smiths Group PLC, a new UK-based company formed as a result of the merger of Smiths Industries and TI Group Inc. John Crane's regular customers include BP, Dresser, Siemens and ITT.
