Hurricanes & Asbestos Exposure
In light of the recent hurricane hits on gulf coast communities, we're teaming up with cities and towns to provide their citizens with some free important information on the dangers of asbestos. So far, the feedback has been tremendous.
Experts estimate as many as 35 million homes across the United States are contaminated with asbestos products. In addition, most homes built before 1980 contain some form of asbestos. When these contaminated construction materials are damaged during a hurricane, hazardous asbestos fibers can be released into the community. In the aftermath, these fibers can become airborne and are easily inhaled and readily attach to clothing, skin, and hair. This is considered a serious environmental hazard by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as by other state and local government agencies. Asbestos exposure has been known to cause a number of health threatening illnesses such as asbestosis and mesothelioma.
In order to educate your community on these risks, we'd like to send you an article for your city website detailing the risk of asbestos exposure after a hurricane, as well as how to prepare for potential damage. It's important that residents know of any potential asbestos containing materials so that they can avoid disturbing them after any hurricane damage. In addition to the information on natural disasters, Asbestos.com contains thousands of pages of resources on the dangers of asbestos in communities, including state and city-specific exposure sites. We also have a large directory of asbestos-containing products to help identify high-risk areas in the home.
Even if your city was not affected by Hurricane Ike, this is still great information that can be useful as a precautionary measure for your community. You never know when something of this magnitude can touch down on your area.
