Glossary - H

Hazard - A hazard is something that causes harm to a person's health, property, or the environment.

Heart - Your heart pumps blood to all other parts of the body. It is a muscle, made up of four chambers, and with each pump, it distributes oxygenated and depleted blood to the right places.

Hemoptysis - Caused by lung or throat problems, hemoptysis is the coughing up of blood.

Hemorrhage - Hemorrhaging is another word for bleeding. This can occur internally or externally.

Hilar - Hilar is an adjective used to describe a depression. In the medical world, it is most often used to describe the triangular-shaped depression in the lung where the root of the lung enter and leave the structure.

Histology - Histology is the study of tissue. This is done by examining thin slices of tissue with a microtome.

Hospice - A hospice is a hospital where patients can go not to cure their disease but rather to simply be more comfortable. Only those who cannot avoid death and simply wish to live out their lives as pain-free and mobile as possible are admitted to a hospice.

Hospital - A hospital is a place to receive medical treatment.

Hypnosis - Hypnosis is a medical procedure in which a patient is put into a deep sleep-like state, while still remaining awake. It can be used to relieve pain, answer psychological questions, and more.

Hypnotherapist - A hypnotherapist is someone trained to induce hypnosis to patients, as well as oversee anything done while the patient is in this sleep-like trance.
