Legal Glossary - A

Ad Litem - A representative is assigned by the court to act on behalf of an individual who cannot, for whatever reason, be there to represent themselves. For instance, someone might be assigned to represent a child.

Additur - Damages may be added to the original amount awarded by the jury. This is not allowed in Federal Courts, but is allowed at the state level on a stat-by-state basis.

Administrative Agency - Agencies that exist outside the executive branch of the government but still may pass regulations. Examples of these agencies are the Social Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the Federal Trade Commission.

Administrative Hearing - Court hearings dealing with rules or regulations put forth by administrative agencies.

Amendment - Any change made to a law, contract, bill or the Constitution.

Amicus Curae - An individual, usually an expert, not involved with either party in a court case who offers information pertinent to the case.

Answer - The first pleading of a defendant after being served with a complaint by the plaintiff in common law.

Appeal - A formal challenge to a decision made by a court. These appeals are heard by an appellate court.

Appellate - A court that hears appeals to decisions made by other courts.

Asbestos Attorney - A lawyer specializing in cases that deal specifically with damages received from exposure to asbestos.
