Radiation Therapy - a type of therapy that involves using ionizing radiation to kill cancer cells. This treatment is often administered following surgery to remove tumors.
Radiologist - a doctor that is specialized in using medical imaging equipment such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans to diagnose disease. This term may also refer to doctors who specialize in the use of radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer.
Radiology - the use of X-rays and other types of radiation and medical imaging technology to diagnose and treat diseases.
Radionuclide Scan - an medical imaging scan in which a patient is injected with a small dose of a radioactive substance. Following this, medical imaging equipment is used to measure radioactivity levels in the body.
Recurrence - subsequent episodes of a disease following the initial episode and treatment.
Release - a document that is signed to settle a legal claim and obtain the amount of settlement money that is agreed upon by both parties.
Remission - full remission is a state in which all signs and symptoms of cancer disappear. In partial remission, some but not all symptoms disappear. Cancer may still be present in the body of a person who is in remission.
Resectable - a tumor or diseased organ or potion of tissue that can be completely removed from the body via surgery is said to be resectable.
Resistance - a condition in which a disease or medical condition does not respond to treatment. For example, mesothelioma cancers are often resistant to many types of chemotherapy.
Respirator - a mask that is worn over the face to prevent the inhalation of dust or harmful particles. This term may also refer to a piece of medical equipment that helps a patient breathe when they are unable to do so without assistance.
Risk factor - environmental factors, genetic factors, or lifestyle factors that contribute to a person's risk of developing cancers. For example, asbestos exposure is a risk factor for mesothelioma.
