Glossary - T
TENS Therapy - transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy uses electrodes to stimulate nerves. This type of therapy is used as a pain management strategy, often for people with cancer.
Thoracentesis - a procedure in which a long, thin hollow needle is inserted into the chest. The needle is used to remove built-up fluid from the pleural spaces.
Thoracic - tissues, processes, diseases, or other medical factors that relate to the chest and the chest region.
Thoracoscopy - a surgical technique in which a small telescopic instrument is inserted into the chest via a small incision. This procedure can be used for examination and exploration purposes, and also to biopsy chest tissue.
Thoracotomy - a surgical procedure in which an incision is made on either the left or right side of the chest. This incision allows the surgeon access to the lungs or heart. In cancer treatment, this term can also refer to removal of one lung and its nearby lymph nodes.
Thorascopy - a surgical procedure in which a small incision small is made in the chest to allow for the insertion of a small telescopic instrument. Also known as a thoracoscopy, this procedure can be used to examine the chest and biopsy chest tissue.
Thrombocytopenia - a person with this condition has a low platelet (thrombocyte) count. People with this condition are often easily bruised and may experience excessive bleeding when injured. This condition is a fairly common side effect of chemotherapy.
Tissue - an aggregation of cells that have a similar function and structure.
TLV (Threshold Limit Value) - this term refers to airborne concentrations of controlled substances such as asbestos. Long term exposure to asbestos is considered safe the airborne concentration of the substance is under the threshold limit value.
Tomotherapy - a relatively new form of radiation therapy for cancer treatment. This type of therapy is considered technologically advanced because it uses CT imaging to deliver more specifically targeted doses of radiation.
Toxic Agent - a chemical or physical substance that is able to harm humans or other life forms.
Toxicity - the extent to which a chemical or physical substance is harmful.
Toxicology - the study of harmful chemical and physical agents, including the study of how such substances affect organisms.
Trachea - the structure which connects the larynx and the bronchi of the lungs.
Tremolite - a type of white or gray asbestos with flexible fibers.
Tubes - also known as bronchial tubes, these lung airways branch out from the trachea.
Tumor - a mass of tissue made up of cells that have begun dividing without restraint. A tumor may be malignant or benign.
Tumor Suppressor Gene - a gene which, when functioning correctly, prevents uncontrolled cell division. If a tumor suppressor gene mutates, the cell with the mutant gene may become cancerous.
Tunica Vaginalis - a membranous pouch that covers each testicle. This membrane layer is part of the peritoneum.
Tunica Serosa Uteri - the membranous lining that covers the uterus. This membrane is an extension of the peritoneum.
