Carbon Nanotubes - Manufacturers

Recent studies have revealed that carbon nanotube exposure may cause scarring to lung tissue that can lead to a deadly cancer called mesothelioma. Carbon nanotubes are used in a variety of products such as tennis rackets, baseball bats, bicycle handlebars and it is on its way to making a big difference in the technology field.

Carbon nanotubes are carbon atoms folded into a cylinder form and can occur as single tubes or as a series of concentric cylinders known as multi-walled nanotubes. They are members of the fullerene family, which includes buckyballs and demonstrated incredible strength, durability and electrical properties that makes it very attractive for digital technology. In fact, it will likely revolutionize electronics, computers, chemistry and materials science.

The problem with the recent studies, though, is not necessarily implicative for civilians who use this product on a daily basis. Instead, the main issue deals with manufacturers who produce and dispose of the product.

It is the long, thin carbon nanotubes that are the greatest risk to workers. It will be up to the manufacturers of these products to make sure precautions are made to protect their employees and avoid "asbestos-like" disasters that plagued America throughout the 20th century.

Nothing conclusive can be said about any of the studies that have been conducted other than some forms of carbon nanotubes can cause scarring in the lungs similar to asbestos. Although, that should be enough to promote stricter standards among nano technology companies to protect their workers and the government to closely monitor the situation.
