Located on the Kennebec River in Maine, Bath Iron Works (BIW) was originally established as an iron foundry in 1826. By 1895, it had become one of the largest shipbuilding facilities in the northeast. Bath Iron Works laid its first hull in 1890. In the years since, the shipyard had been awarded more than 425 shipbuilding contracts. Those contracts included nearly 250 military contracts and 160 private yachts and commercial vessels. These days, Bath Iron Works continues to be a busy shipyard, holding contracts for Navy ships through 2010 and beyond.
BIW's statement of Environmental Health and Safety includes the sentence, "It is our intent that every employee of BIW leaves work each day in the same condition they arrived in." Unfortunately, for most of the history of Bath Iron Works, their workers did not leave work each day in the same condition in which they arrived. As was the case in all shipyards, asbestos was widely used at BIW to insulate pipes and boilers and for many other uses. Employees at the Bath Iron Works were exposed to asbestos in the ambient air throughout the day. This included exposure to asbestos being used to fabricate and build the ships as well as that which was found in equipment and machinery used by workers to do the building.
Asbestos is a deadly hazard. Airborne fibers of asbestos can be inhaled or swallowed, and become lodged in the tissues of the body. Years later, the fibers may cause the development of a range of conditions including asbestosis, a non-malignant but deadly lung disease, and mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the lining of the lungs.
If you worked at the Bath Iron Works, you may have been exposed to asbestos. In addition, your family members may have been exposed to asbestos due to dust carried home on your clothing and on your person. If your work at Bath Iron Works has prompted the development of mesothelioma, you may be entitled to compensation for your damages and illness.
