Other TopicsValve Rings - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks
The repair and removal of asbestos valve rings is one of the occupational duties that may expose workers to asbestos. Due to the high temperatures generated by engines, valve rings were made with asbestos becuase of its heat-resistent properties. Before the dangers of asbestos became well-known, nearly all valve rings were made with asbestos.
Exposure to asbestos, particularly airborne asbestos, has been linked to the only known cause of mesothelioma. The use of asbestos in many applications was banned in the 1980s, but many of those bans were lifted in the early 1990s because of the difficulty in finding other materials that could offer the same benefits as asbestos. Products that still contain asbestos today require stringent labeling and must include guidelines for safe handling and use.
There have been thousands of lawsuits filed against the makers of products that used or were made of asbestos, including the manufacturers of ring valves, valve rings, pistons, bearing packing, and other parts widely used in engine manufacturing. Juries and judges have awarded large settlements to plaintiffs who developed mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases.
These large settlements were usually predicated on the fact that the asbestos industry was aware of the dangers of working with asbestos and made no effort to warn workers and consumers of those dangers. The makers of asbestos products like ring valves, bearing packing, and many other parts of engines were well aware that asbestos caused deadly lung diseases, such as mesothelioma.
If you have been exposed to asbestos and developed mesothelioma as a result, you may have a right to compensation under the law. It's important to contact a mesothelioma lawyer who understands the laws regarding asbestos litigation in your state.
