Furnace Cement
Asbestos used to be used in the fabrication of many different products including furnace cement. Furnace cement is used around boilers and furnaces and was used to cement fire brick in place. The purpose of furnace cement and fire brick was to quarantine a fire if one should erupt and keep it in a closed in space to prevent it from spreading throughout a building.
Asbestos was a common product used for fire retardant materials such as furnace cement because of its resiliency, fire retardant properties, durability and cost effectiveness. However, at the time that asbestos was in constant use, the health ramifications were not well known by most people. Today, furnace cement is not made with asbestos and much of the asbestos furnace cement has been removed and replaced with non-asbestos furnace cement and fire brick.
Asbestos is now known to cause serious health problems and cancer called mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a fatal cancer that is not cured by conventional cancer treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy. The cancer is of the mesothelium, the lining surrounding most of the internal organs. Mesothelioma is most common in the pleura, the lining of the lungs, but has also been seen in the lining of the heart or abdomen.
While data show that mesothelioma is a rather unusual type of cancer, only causing three per cent of yearly cancer-related deaths in the US, there are some 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma reported each year. The only known cause for mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos products such as furnace cement.
For citizens who worked for companies manufacturing asbestos furnace cement, as well as production workers who installed furnace cement, the chance of mesothelioma is there. However there is no express link between the amount of contact with asbestos products and increased odds of contracting mesothelioma. There are numerous people who've only had restricted exposure to asbestos and have contracted the disease, while others with widespread exposure have not.
Asbestos fibers are very slim and virtually everlasting. They are easily inhaled and can become stuck in the lining of the heart, lungs or abdomen. These lodged fibers cause irritation which leads to mesothelioma. However it takes between 15 and 40 years for symptoms of mesothelioma to materialize, which makes it difficult for people or lawyers to isolate the cause of the asbestos cancer.
However, if you specifically worked installing fire bricks and furnace cement or worked manufacturing furnace cement, a mesothelioma lawyer can help you. If you or someone you love has fallen victim to this appalling and terminal cancer, contact a mesothelioma lawyer to discuss beginning a grievance against the manufacturing companies and companies who used asbestos furnace cement.
Many of the companies continued to use, formulate and install asbestos furnace cement even once it was known that asbestos is detrimental to healthiness, and many still did very little to avert exposure for their employees.
Today, there are very few goods that are made with asbestos and most of the existing asbestos products, such as furnace cement, have been removed from buildings. However, in some older buildings, it is feasible that some asbestos furnace cement is still in use. There's been a lot of information regarding the damaging effects of asbestos and most businesses and buildings have worked to remove asbestos products from their districts.
If you, or someone you love, have mesothelioma cancer, contact a mesothelioma attorney to discuss your case.
