Boiler Insulation - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks
For more than half a century, asbestos has been a popular material used in the construction of industrial, commercial and residential properties. However, over the last few decades, asbestos and all asbestos-containing products have been banned in many countries, including Australia and Great Britain. This is because of the harmful effects of the material.
Despite the known dangers of asbestos exposure, the use of this substance in construction and manufacturing continued without restriction until the 1970s. In America, the Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the use of asbestos in most construction materials in 1977. However, because the ban applied only to the production of new supplies of materials and not to the use of existing stocks of asbestos-containing products, these existing supplies were used until the mid-1980s.
It is likely that millions of homes in the United States are contaminated with asbestos. Asbestos has been installed in countless homes in the United States and to insulate boilers. While asbestos is very effective in this application, it is also extremely unsafe and reflects negligence on the part of the company that has installed or manufactured your boiler.
This asbestos boiler insulation is not hazardous as long as it remains sealed beneath a layer of canvas and a special coating agent. However, if the canvas wears down or is broken by an impact or during the replacement of your boiler, millions of tiny asbestos fibers and particles can be released into the air. When such an event takes place, the asbestos fibers can be inhaled, which can cause serious damage to your body.
Asbestos and Legal Options
Exposure to airborne asbestos particles from your boiler insulation can cause lung scarring, making it difficult for you and your loved ones to breath. Over time, this damage to your lungs often develops into an extremely deadly form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. In many cases, mesothelioma symptoms take many years or decades to present themselves.
If you or a loved one have been exposed to the asbestos-containing boiler insulation or any other asbestos material and have been diagnosed with a related disease, you may have legal options for compensation.
