Brick and Block Mortar - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks
Asbestos was a popular additive to many building and construction products because it is highly fire-resistant and effective at insulating against extreme temperatures. The use of asbestos in these products was widely accepted and so universal that nearly every building built before the 1970s was likely to contain asbestos in some form or application.
Due to the hazards that asbestos exposure has shown to present, asbestos has been banned in the United States in all new products that do not have a history of containing asbestos. For the average home or institution, this means that most products and construction or remodeling materials coming into your home today are nearly asbestos-free.
However, many of the homes in which we live and the buildings in which we work each day harbor numerous materials that contain asbestos. When the presence of these materials and their dangers are not properly addressed, you and your family are at risk of being exposed to the effects of asbestos exposure.
While asbestos is not necessarily dangerous when contained, you can never be certain of your safety when there is asbestos lurking in the walls of your home. If the asbestos in your home or workplace is disturbed during daily activity or a building renovation, asbestos particles can be released into the air. If these particles are inhaled, there is a chance of an asbestos-related disease developing later on in life.
Asbestos and Legal Options
The dangers of asbestos were known long before the substance was banned. Tragically, many companies who were aware of the risks did not provide adequate protection for the workers who were exposed to asbestos. Due to the long latency period of diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis, it was several decades before large numbers of people developed these conditions.
Because many companies ignored the risks of working with asbestos, people who are diagnosed with mesothelioma have the right to pursue financial compensation from the company responsible for their asbestos exposure. Many have already received assistance to help pay for medical expenses. For more information, please fill out the request form on this page to receive a free informational packet.
