Asbestos Products

Brick and Block Mortar

Quite recently, even just a few decades ago, asbestos was a popular additive to many building and construction products, because it is highly fire retardant and effective at insulating against extreme temperatures. The use of asbestos in these products was widely accepted and so universal that every home, office, school -- every building built before the 1970s very likely contains asbestos in some form or application. Due to the hazards that asbestos exposure has recently been shown to present, asbestos has been banned in the United States in all new products that do not have a history of containing asbestos. For the average home or institution, this means that most products and construction or remodeling materials coming into your home today are nearly asbestos-free. However, many of the homes in which we live and the buildings in which we work each day harbor numerous materials that contain asbestos. When the presence of these materials and their dangers are not properly addressed, you and your family are at risk of being exposed to the deadly effects of asbestos.

Though today many of the products one might find on the market are safe for use, the places we live and frequent may be crawling with materials containing asbestos, and this is hazardous to the health of the entire community. Before light was recently shed on the widespread dangers of asbestos exposure, nearly all brick and block mortar used in the construction of homes, commercial buildings, and institutions contained asbestos. Asbestos mortar was considered superior to cement mortar for its admirable hardness and insulating properties, but while homes were solid and well insulated, they also threatened to exposure their inhabitants to asbestos particles. Today, multitudes of schools, hospitals, homes, and businesses contain asbestos brick and block mortar in their foundation, their walls, in decorative applications, and countless other locations and applications. The risk this presents is palpable.

Are you in danger if the buildings in which you or your loved ones spend their time are contaminated with asbestos brick or block mortar? While asbestos is not necessarily dangerous when contained -- that is, when it cannot be inhaled -- you can never be certain of your safety when there is asbestos lurking in the walls of your home. If the asbestos in your home or workplace is disturbed during daily activity or a building renovation, asbestos particles can be released into the air, at which point your home is definitely no longer safe. Whenever asbestos-containing brick or block mortar is manipulated, tampered with, or removed by an individual who is not specially trained, anyone near the mortar is directly within harm's way.

When asbestos is allowed to escape into the atmosphere, you are in danger of inhaling these nefarious particles. Asbestos may remain a hazard to those nearby for many years, because a simple breeze could again disrupt the settled particles. Any contact and resulting inhalation with these asbestos particles can result in a number of very serious illnesses. Asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer, and non-cancerous conditions can result from this exposure, and all of these illnesses are potentially life threatening. The symptoms of these deadly diseases often present only years or scores of years after initial exposure, meaning that time is of the essence for those who may have been exposed to asbestos. Don't wait until it is too late to protect your family from mesothelioma! If you think a building you or your loved ones frequent may contain asbestos, call an attorney today. An experienced attorney can make sure that those whose negligence put you in danger are held responsible!
