Electric Wiring Insulation
Asbestos - it's a word that inspires a feeling of danger in people because it is now known that asbestos is bad for our health and that working with it and breathing in asbestos fibers can be hazardous to our health. However, we as a society didn't always know that asbestos was dangerous and for many years, asbestos was used in electric wiring insulation for many different products and in many buildings.
Asbestos is known for it's durability - asbestos fibers are strong and they make for great insulation. Use for asbestos skyrocketed during World War II and for many years after. It wasn't until later that we found out that asbestos can cause diseases and death from a cancer called mesothelioma.
Electric wiring insulation is everywhere - just think about all the electrical wiring in your home and in your office building. Every square inch of electrical wiring is insulated. In the past, much of the electric wiring insulation was insulated using asbestos because of its properties and strength.
Asbestos use was heavy throughout the years of the Second World War, especially in ship yards across the country. However, many businesses used asbestos in their daily manufacturing for many different uses. It wasn't known then that asbestos could lead to long term health problems. For many people, these health problems don't show up for 15 to 40 years. One of the main diseases that are associated with asbestos exposure on electric wiring insulation is mesothelioma - a type of cancer that affects the pleura (the lining of the lungs), or the lining of the abdomen or heart.
For people who worked with electric wiring insulation and for those who had asbestos-laden electric wiring insulation in their homes and office places, their risk of contracting mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases is increased. There is no cure for mesothelioma - none of the standard cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy have any effect on this type of cancer. Most people who are diagnosed with mesothelioma succumb to the disease shortly after diagnosis is made.
With no known cure but a known cause, mesothelioma is a dangerous and fatal cancer. The only linked cause to mesothelioma is asbestos exposure such as with electric wiring insulation. The fibers that are used to make electric wiring insulation are very fine and easily inhaled. However, they are also very durable and when they are inhaled can become lodged in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart and the human body is powerless to rid itself of the intrusion. The asbestos fibers inflame the affected area after some time, and for many people, cause mesothelioma cancer.
However, with that said, there is no specific amount of asbestos exposure that relates to diseases such as mesothelioma. People with very little exposure have contracted the cancer, while others with massive exposure have not. electric wiring insulation is just one of the factors that can exacerbate and even cause mesothelioma, asbestosis or other asbestos-exposure related diseases, but there is not set amount. For many people, especially those whom are older today and lived in homes with asbestos electric wiring insulation and worked in places with electric wiring insulation containing asbestos and especially those people who worked to manufacture electric wiring insulation, the chances of mesothelioma are definitely increased.
If you, or someone you love, has been diagnosed with mesothelioma and used to live or work with electric wiring insulation containing asbestos, or helped to manufacture asbestos-laden electric wiring insulation, contact a mesothelioma lawyer to discuss your case.
