Firefoil Panel
Many years ago, and primarily throughout the Second World War, asbestos was a common element in many products and many of those products were fire retarding products such as firefoil panel. Firefoil panels are a safety precaution used primarily in public office buildings that work to compartmentalize fires when they occur. Firefoil panels are fire resistant and in the past were made with asbestos until it was discovered that asbestos has major health concerns and is a dangerous product. Firefoil panels are installed in walls and ceilings to help stop fires from spreading throughout the building.
Asbestos was used to make firefoil panels for many reasons. Asbestos is resilient and cost efficient. The asbestos fibers are nearly imperishable and are a great fire retardant, making them extraordinary for use in firefoil panels. However, now it is known that asbestos is detrimental to health and can cause severe health problems and diseases such as mesothelioma cancer.
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart. It is considered to be an atypical type of cancer, however it accounts of three per cent of cancer related deaths each year and 2,000 new cases are reported yearly. The only known cause for mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. This lethal cancer does not respond to the usual cancer treatments such as chemo and radiation therapies.
There were many public office buildings that made use of asbestos firefoil panels as preventative measures to keep fires from spreading throughout the building. Today, firefoil panels are made with alternate products and do not include asbestos. However, there is a possibility that some older buildings still have firefoil panels made with asbestos in them. However, there has been a large drive over the past few decades to remove asbestos products, such as firefoil panels from public buildings and homes.
For the workers who worked to construct buldings using firefoil panels that contained asbestos and the employees for manufacturers of firefoil panels containing asbestos, there is a risk of mesothelioma cancer and other asbestos related diseases. There is no direct correlation to the amount of exposure to asbestos and increased changes of being diagnosed with an asbestos exposure related illness. There are people with very restricted asbestos firefoil panel exposure that have been diagnosed, while others with recurrent or major exposure are never diagnosed.
Mesothelioma symptoms, as well as symptoms for other asbestos related illnesses, take anywhere between 15 and 40 years to appear. This makes it very difficult to establish the cause of the diseases in relation to asbestos exposure. The only cause of mesothelioma cancer that is known and recognized is asbestos exposure. However, throughout the decades, many materials in buildings, both public buildings and homes, were made with asbestos, including firefoil panels.
When a person is diagnosed with mesothelioma, there is not much that a doctor can do except improve quality of life. For the families and loved ones of mesothelioma cancer victims, there is help. A skilled mesothelioma lawyer can help you commence proceedings for asbestos laden firefoil panel that have caused mesothelioma in yourself or in your family member.
While money won in proceedings will not bring back a loved one or reduce the pain a death or illness has caused, it can help to improve the quality of life for the victim as well as for the families by paying for medical expenditures, funeral costs and lost income.
