Flex Board
For many years, flex board contained asbestos, which is now known to be a dangerous product. Flex board was and is used in many instances of construction for buildings of all types including homes, office buildings and more. With so many uses, flex board was quite popular as was its ingredient asbestos.
Asbestos was used for many reasons but primarily because of its resiliency. Asbestos fibers are thin but quite durable and are considered to be nearly indestructible - asbestos was also cost-efficient. For most construction companies, using asbestos products was the norm.
Asbestos use was at its peak during World War II, primarily in construction and in ship yards across the country. For construction workers, this means that their exposure to asbestos was heightened.
Asbestos exposure has been linked to numerous illnesses and a cancer called mesothelioma. Mesothelioma cancer is a cancer of the lining of the major organs called the mesothelium, which surrounds the lungs, heart and abdomen. Primarily, mesothelioma is found in the lining of the lungs and is caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers, which become lodged in the mesothelium, then inflamed over the years. It takes between 15 and 40 years for the symptoms of mesothelioma and other asbestos related illnesses to appear, which makes it difficult to pinpoint the cause of the disease, other than that it was due to asbestos exposure.
If you worked in construction with flex board, you were likely exposed to asbestos. However, there is no correlation between the amount of exposure to asbestos and an increased likelihood of getting mesothelioma or other asbestos- exposure related diseases. Some people with very limited exposure have been diagnosed, while others, people who worked consistently in construction with asbestos laden flex board, never contract the diseases.
It's not only the construction workers that are at a risk for mesothelioma cancer. People who worked in buildings containing asbestos flex board are also at risk. Even more, the families of construction workers and those who worked near flex board are also at risk. Because asbestos fibers are so thin, they are easily dislodged and inhaled, as well as to cling to hair, clothing, skin and shoes, which could then be taken home and likewise dislodged into the air and just as easily inhaled.
For people with mesothelioma cancer, or other asbestos-exposure related illnesses and diseases, it is important that you contact a mesothelioma lawyer to discuss your case. A qualified and experienced mesothelioma lawyer can help get you compensation to replace lost wages, funeral expenses and medical bills. Money doesn't ease the pain and suffering nor does it replace a life cut short because of asbestos, but it can certainly help with the finances surrounding the illness.
