Flooring Backing
For decades, asbestos was a very common ingredient for many products that were used in the construction of buildings, homes and other things. Just one of those products is floor backing, and asbestos was a very common ingredient. Floor backing is the protective sheet under hardwood floor boards, linoleum, floor tiles and sometimes carpet. Because asbestos was so common in floor backing, there are many places that may still have asbestos floor backing in them without even knowing.
Asbestos is no longer a popular ingredient for products such as floor backing because it has been found that asbestos is dangerous to health. Asbestos fibers are very strong and durable, which is one of the many reasons the product was so popular. However the fibers are also very thin and can be inhaled quite easily. When inhaled, sometimes these asbestos fibers get lodged in the mesothelium, the lining of major organs. The body is powerless to get rid of these tiny asbestos fibers and they can become inflamed and cause disease or cancer called mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer of the lining of the lungs, heart or abdomen, that makes up approximately three per cent of cancer related deaths each year. While this cancer is considered to be rare, it accounts for nearly 2,000 new cases each year in the United States. Mesothelioma's only known cause is asbestos exposure and this cancer does not respond to common cancer treatments such as chemo and radiation therapies.
There is no direct correlation between the levels of asbestos exposure and contracting mesothelioma. There are people who have very little exposure to floor backing that have contracted the disease, while others who worked regularly with asbestos laden floor backing that do not contract mesothelioma. Everyone, no matter how extreme or miniscule the exposure to asbestos can have mesothelioma.
With so many homes and office buildings, as well as public building using asbestos floor backing, and the production of asbestos products such as floor backing peaking during the time when asbestos use was high, there are thousands of people who've been exposed to asbestos floor backing that may not even realize it. It may even be in your home.
There has been a massive effort to abolish asbestos in our homes and public buildings, however because there are so many older buildings, especially those built during the era of World War II, there is likely still some asbestos floor backing in use throughout the country.
There are many people who've been exposed to asbestos laden floor backing and may not even know it. The only cause for mesothelioma is asbestos exposure, and if you, or someone you love, is diagnosed, it is imperative that you contact a qualified mesothelioma lawyer to help you launch proceedings against the companies that used, manufactured and built with asbestos floor backing products. For people who worked in construction during the time when asbestos use was high, there is a good probability of asbestos exposure.
A mesothelioma lawyer can help you launch proceedings from which the funds can help you and your family replace lost wages, pay for medical bills and other expenses, such as funeral expenses. Proceeds from a lawsuit will not restore health or life, but can help with the financial ramifications of mesothelioma cancer or other asbestos related diseases.
