Ehret Block was the common name of a type of insulation manufactured by the Ehret Magnesia Manufacturing Company, later called Baldwin-Ehret-Hill. Ehret block was a preformed block insulation that contained high levels of asbestos. The company was located at the current site of the Valley Forge National Park, which has had to deal with the cleanup of asbestos from years of manufacturing asbestos insulated pipes. Ehret Magnesia Manufacturing and its successor companies have been successfully sued for exposing those who used their products to asbestos.
Asbestos in products like Ehret block can cause mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that results from inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers. Workers who used insulation that contains asbestos in their work face a risk of mesothelioma that is five times greater than that faced by the general public. Asbestos was used extensively for insulation throughout the twentieth century because its properties make it extremely versatile. It mixes easily with most other substances, and can be combined with Portland cement, woven into insulating felt or paper, dissolved and sprayed on surfaces, painted on surfaces, wrapped around pipes and joints and otherwise used in applications where most other insulators fall short.
Unfortunately, asbestos has one major drawback - it causes a deadly disease when tiny asbestos fibers are inhaled or swallowed. The asbestos companies were aware of the dangers inherent in asbestos for years and hid them from their workers and the public because they were afraid of losing sales. Had they been more open about the hazards associated with asbestos and its use, workers and others who used asbestos products could have taken safety precautions when installing and working with them. Because the dangers were deliberately hidden, hundreds of thousands of people have become ill and died of mesothelioma and other conditions related to exposure to asbestos dust.
Mesothelioma can take up to forty years to develop after exposure to asbestos. While it was once believed that the risk of developing mesothelioma only applied to those who worked with asbestos laced products on a daily basis for years, it is now known that mesothelioma can result from a much shorter exposure. There have been cases of people who worked for a month as insulators in ship yards or construction and have had no other exposure to asbestos who later developed mesothelioma. Because of this, it is recommended that any removal of products like Ehret block be undertaken by professionals who have the equipment and the training to keep the release of asbestos dust into the air to a minimum.
Since the 1970s, the courts have awarded millions of dollars to former workers in the insulation and construction industries who were diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis and other asbestos related diseases. The companies that mined, processed and made asbestos products have been held responsible for the damages caused by their products in many cases. If you were exposed to asbestos in the making of Ehret block, or in using Ehret block or any other type of asbestos containing material, you may have a legal recourse. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, an experienced mesothelioma lawyer can tell you about your legal options with regards to asbestos and the companies that might be responsible for your illness. Even if you are not certain how or when you were exposed to asbestos, a lawyer with extensive experience in researching and litigating mesothelioma lawsuits has the resources to help you find those responsible and make the courts hold them accountable for their actions.
