Asbestos was widely used in the construction industry, and in ship-yards and other manufacturing industries, for the majority of the twentieth century. The physical properties of asbestos made it a very popular choice in such industries - asbestos is strong and durable, extremely fire-resistant, and is also an excellent insulating material.
Asbestos tiles were commonly used on both floors and ceilings, particularly in locations where protection from heat sources was required. These were typically a composite made from asbestos and vinyl, and most contained approximately 20% asbestos.
Despite the popularity of asbestos, this substance is also extremely dangerous. Exposure to asbestos is a known cause of lung cancer, and is the sole cause of a lung disease called asbestosis, as well as a rare form of cancer called mesothelioma that commonly develops in the lining of the lungs. All three of these diseases are caused by long-term inhalation of asbestos fibers that typically occurs over several years.
Asbestos was a common component of an enormous range of construction products well into the 1980s. The Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the use of asbestos in such products in 1977 due to the health risks associated with exposure to the substance; however existing supplies of such products continued to be used until the mid-1980s. Exposure to asbestos via asbestos tile may have occurred to anyone who was involved in the manufacture or use of these products if appropriate safety precautions were not taken.
If you are a home-owner who is concerned about the presence of asbestos in your home, it is important to realize that asbestos tiles do not typically pose any health risks, as long as they are in good condition and are not chipped, cracked or otherwise broken. Asbestos fibers are generally dangerous only when airborne, as it is only then that they can be inhaled into to the lungs. However, any disturbances to the tile can release asbestos fibers, and if the tiles are in poor condition this is much more likely to occur. This may occur through everyday use, and is very likely to happen during remodeling activities; professional advice should be sought on the removal of asbestos tiles to ensure the home remains safe and free of asbestos fibers.
If you or a loved one has developed mesothelioma or asbestosis as a consequence of asbestos exposure either at home or at work, you may be eligible to claim financial compensation from the company responsible for the exposure. The health risks associated with asbestos were known as early as the 1930s, and yet the use of asbestosis continued for several decades, inflicting unnecessary pain and suffering on thousands of workers who were not provided with safety equipment that could have protected them from asbestos exposure.
In America, there is a statute of limitations that applies to cases of asbestos-related disease. In most states, you must begin legal proceedings within two or three years of diagnosis of asbestosis or mesothelioma, so it is important to contact a mesothelioma lawyer without delay once a diagnosis has been made. Your mesothelioma lawyer can assist you in building a case against the company responsible for your exposure to asbestos. Financial compensation can pay for the costs of medical treatment, replace income lost through being unable to work, and ensure that the responsible parties are held responsible for their actions.
