Glassbestos

Asbestos - this is a word that today instills fears in many people. However in decades past, especially during the era of the Second World War, asbestos was a commonly used product that was used to manufacture many different items that were used in every day life. Asbestos was a word that was not scary, rather it elated business owners.

Asbestos is a sturdy and powerful product that is made from glass - many people call this product glassbestos. Glassbestos strands are very fine yet very strong - they do well under pressure, act as a great insulator for pipes and electrical wiring as well as reinforce many other products that otherwise would not have been as strong. Glassbestos was also very cost effective for producers of many different products - glassbestos meant they could turn out products that were cheap to manufacture yet stronger than competition who didn't use glassbestos in their products.

Today, we know that glassbestos is harmful to health and can cause malignant cancer called mesothelioma as well as other glassbestos-related illnesses such as asbestosis.

Mesothelioma is a lethal form of cancer of the lining of the lungs, heart or abdomen and the only known cause for mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. There's no definitive level of exposure that makes a person prone to mesothelioma, anyone with any level of exposure, from infrequent to frequent, including workers who made glassbestos and other products containing glassbestos, can contract this dreadful disease. Many people who are diagnosed with mesothelioma do not live long past diagnosis - this cancer does not respond to common cancer treatments such as chemotherapy.

Mesothelioma is considered to be a rare cancer, making up only three per cent of cancer-related deaths in the United States each year. However, there are approximately 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma reported each year.

Workers who helped to manufacture glassbestos, as well as people who worked in buildings that had glassbestos products, are at risk for asbestos related diseases such as mesothelioma. Products that were manufactured using glassbestos can release asbestos fibers in to the air in places where they were used as well - and a working part, such as so many that were made with glassbestos, can continue to cause problems as long as they are used.

You must be asking yourself why companies would use a product like glassbestos to make other products, especially products that were part of air exchange systems and moving parts. The answer is quite simple - glassbestos is a fine fiber that is virtually indestructible. It was cheap and easy to use for many different products, and because of its durability, made sense to use - cheap and virtually indestructible, a manufacturer's dream. These are the reasons why, when it started to become known that glassbestos was actually quite a dangerous product, that many companies didn't cease to use glassbestos to make products. However, it doesn't explain away why these companies, who continued to use glassbestos to make a variety of other products, didn't employ some safety measures to keep glassbestos exposure at a minimum.

This is why, if you or someone you love has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should speak to a competent mesothelioma attorney who knows about glassbestos and related products to help you with a claim. Many of the companies who made glassbestos products were well aware of the consequences of asbestos exposure and chose not to make use of any protection measures or alter their glassbestos manufacturing processes.
