Other TopicsIron Rests
Iron rests help wives and mothers everywhere get the laundry done without accidentally scorching clothing or burning themselves. This items is meant to be a tool for safety, providing a place for the hot iron to sit between jobs or as it cools. It is ironic then that irons rests can be the source of something that can make everyone in the home very, very sick - asbestos. Asbestos exposure is the only known way to contract mesothelioma, a rare cancer that is extremely dangers. By having an older iron rest in your house, you could be exposing your family to asbestos, and putting them at risk for contracting mesothelioma. Laundry just went from mundane to murderous!
Asbestos is a natural substance found in the earth. However, don't equate the word "natural" with the word "healthy," as we're often inclined to do. Three of the six varieties of asbestos were used to make products, including iron rests, before the 1980s. The three types of asbestos most commonly used are:
- Chrysotile, or "white" asbestos
- Amosite, or "brown" asbestos
- Crocidolite, or "blue" asbestos
All three cause mesothelioma. White asbestos accounts for the vast majority of the asbestos found in the United States. Although many companies know about mesothelioma and the risk developing mesothelioma when exposed to asbestos, few did anything about it for many decades because asbestos is cheap, flexible, durable, heat resistant, and strong. Because companies conspired to keep mesothelioma a secret, mesothelioma patients were often unknowingly exposed to asbestos particles in the air.
While it's not a good thing that so many of our daily items were once made using asbestos, we can at least be glad that white asbestos is the least dangerous of the three varieties because it's fibers are curly. White asbestos is what you're likely to find with your iron rests.
Why are the curly qualities of the asbestos fibers important? Well, asbestos causes mesothelioma when the asbestos fibers invade your body. The asbestos gets stuck in the sensitive linings of your organs, which causes rips and tears. Since the white asbestos fibers are curlier, they are less likely to create problems. However, over time, they can still cause mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, a kind of cancer, is very deadly. The mesothelioma develops when the scar tissue built up around the tears caused by the asbestos begins to mutate. Tumors develop and the mesothelioma travels down the bloodstream to all parts of your body until you are overtaken with mesothelioma tumors.
Unfortunately, most people don't know that they have mesothelioma until they feel pain, which only occurs when the tumors grow large enough to cause the pain. At that point, the mesothelioma is very hard to treat, so most mesothelioma patients do not live long after being diagnosed. Mesothelioma attacks everyone of every age, race, gender, and economic background, and there is no cure or immunization available.
Luckily, you can prevent mesothelioma quite easily - just get rid on anything in your household that could potentially cause mesothelioma. This may include getting professional asbestos tests, but in the case of an old iron rest, it is probably simply in your best interest to replace it. All iron rests made in since the 1980s are free from asbestos and will not cause mesothelioma. They're affordable too, at less than $10 each. You health is important, and remember, mesothelioma usually develops when you are unknowingly exposed to asbestos.
