The physical properties of asbestos - its strength, durability, excellent insulating capability, and fire resistance - made it a popular choice for use in a wide range of industrial and manufacturing processes in the twentieth century. Asbestos was widely used in more than five thousand different products, including asbestos mittens and other types of protective clothing.
Asbestos mittens were used in manufacturing and industrial purposes, to protect workers' hands from extremes of hot and cold temperatures. Asbestos mittens and gloves were used by workers in places such as foundries, steel plants and glassworks, and often by firefighters. While the use of asbestos in mittens and other protective garments did protect workers from extreme heat, it also exposed them to serious health risks, including several forms of cancer.
Asbestos mittens typically contain 40% asbestos or more. The use of asbestos mittens and gloves was widespread in the twentieth century and they may still be used in some industries despite the known risks of asbestos exposure.
The Dangers of Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos is now widely known as a hazardous substance, and the dangerous of asbestos may have been known as early as the 1930s. Even so, it was not until the 1970s that the use of asbestos was more tightly controlled. Repeated exposure to asbestos over several years is known to cause lung caner, asbestosis, and mesothelioma, a rare and highly lethal form of cancer that is caused only by exposure to asbestos.
Mesothelioma cancer is a particularly lethal type of cancer for several reasons. It has a long latency period, meaning that several decades typically elapse between initial asbestos exposure and the onset of cancer symptoms. In addition, mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose accurately and early, because in the early stages of the disease the symptoms are very nonspecific, resembling symptoms of much less serious diseases such as influenza and pneumonia. Finally, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma, and the treatments currently available are often ineffective because the disease is diagnosed too late. More than two thousand Americans are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year, and less than half of those will live longer than two years post-diagnosis.
Mesothelioma most commonly develops in the lungs of people who are exposed to asbestos, as airborne fibers can be inhaled into the lungs. Asbestos mittens and other protective clothing is particularly dangerous when the items are old or in poor condition, as the risk of loose fibers becoming airborne is much greater.
Asbestos Exposure and your Legal Rights
Mesothelioma and asbestosis occur only as a result of repeated exposure to asbestos, and anyone exposed through wearing asbestos mittens or other asbestos-containing clothing is likely to have been exposed at work. If you have developed an asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma, it is often possible to claim financial compensation from the company responsible for your asbestos exposure. The dangers of asbestos were known decades before the use of the substance was regulated, and before most companies made any efforts to protect their workers from the health risks associated with its use.
Putting workers at risk despite knowing the potential dangers of asbestos is a highly negligent act, and if you've developed mesothelioma as a result, claiming financial compensation is a good way of ensuring the company responsible is held accountable for their failure to protect you. Compensation can also replace lost income and provide funds to cover medical expenses, to help ensure your family can remain financially stable.
