Experts have estimated that during its reign as the ''go-to' material for heating insulation needs, asbestos could be found in more than three thousand consumer products and materials. While some of these products were used to build homes and schools or to expedite industries, very often homeowners bought products containing asbestos to use to various ends in their homes. Before the 1970s, when the general public started to catch on to the dangers of asbestos, many small home appliances contained asbestos. Some of these appliances were designed for use in the kitchen, where consumers and homeowners could use them to make meals for their loved ones. The use of asbestos in these kitchen appliances may have had lasting, devastating effects upon many families, who have been exposed to asbestos in the course of meal preparation or repair of an appliance.
Asbestos was particularly popular for use in kitchen appliances, because it is an extremely poor conductor of heat, making it very useful as an insulator for wiring, or as a heat shield in items such as popcorn poppers. Popcorn poppers that contained asbestos were particularly problematic, because they were buggy and broke down fairly often. Whoever was called upon to fix the broken down popcorn popper, whether it was the homeowner himself or a repairman, would be at risk of exposure to the asbestos-containing heat shield inside the unit. Many individuals who worked as a small appliance repairman in the decades leading up to the 1970s eventually developed a serious, life-threatening illness as a result of these exposures to asbestos in appliances and other consumer products. In fact, in 2001 the family of a deceased repairman took part in one of the first lawsuits filed against manufacturers of asbestos-containing products. According to the family attorney, before this claim most lawsuits focused on workers who were exposed to asbestos in factories, shipyards, or other industry facilities. Now, increasing numbers repairmen, homeowners, and even bakers have begun to suspect they have been exposed to asbestos in their own homes or kitchens, through contact with popcorn poppers, hair dryers, ovens and other small appliances.
Homeowners, business owners, and other appliance consumers have a right to correct and appropriate information concerning the products in their homes and kitchens. Many popcorn popper and hair dryer owners have been exposed to asbestos unknowingly, simply because the manufacturer of the product neglected to inform them of the presence of asbestos in the product. Each year in the United States, 10,000 innocent people die as a result of exposure to asbestos, and many of these exposures and deaths could likely be prevented with the proper precautionary warnings or information. When consumer aren't aware that they have an appliance containing asbestos in their home -- and many still do -- they are at risk for developing a life-threatening illness. Exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer, intestinal cancer, mesothelioma, and other deadly medical conditions and illnesses. Some of these asbestos-related illnesses can take years or even decades to present a symptom, and by that time it may already be too late.
Don't be a victim to the asbestos industry! These manufacturers of asbestos-containing small appliances steal innocent lives away from the communities and families that love them. Consumers have a right to information concerning the materials contained in products and the possible risks posed by those materials. Don't wait until you present symptoms of mesothelioma. If you believe you or someone you love has been exposed to asbestos, please contact a knowledgeable attorney who can fight for your rights.
