Pumps

Everyone has heard of cancer and most people know someone close to them who has been afflicted with some form of cancer. We know what causes some forms of cancer - smoking cigarettes and a variety of other actions. One cause of cancer is asbestos exposure and many people don't know that and have never heard of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is cancer of the mesothelium - the protective lining of the heart, abdomen and lungs. All cases of mesothelioma can be attributed to asbestos exposure. The long term effects of asbestos exposure have only come to light in the last few decades and people are still finding out how their asbestos exposure is affecting their lives, years and even decades later.

Asbestos was used to make a variety of products because of its longevity and durability. One product that used asbestos was pumps. Pumps were used in a variety of applications in the home and in office buildings as well as in ships that were made for the navy. During World War II, ship building increased significantly, producing ships for the war efforts. Obviously, pumps were used extensively on ships and thusly, shipyard workers and sailors were exposed to asbestos daily.

Mesothelioma is considered to be a relatively rare cancer - only approximately 2,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year in the United States. Even with these low numbers, this is a cancer that we know the main cause - exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma is most well-known in men and most often appears in later age, however it is important to note that both men and women can be diagnosed with mesothelioma at any age and at any time after their exposure to asbestos.

Exposure to asbestos can mean a lot of things - it is shown that people who have prolonged, heavy or excessive exposure to asbestos such as installing or manufacturing pumps have a greater chance of being diagnosed with mesothelioma. However, people who have only had a brief exposure period to asbestos have also been diagnosed with mesothelioma. However, there are also people who were heavily exposed to asbestos that are never diagnosed with mesothelioma.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the United States has set restrictions on tolerable levels of asbestos exposure and enforces a policy that people who work with asbestos to wear protective equipment to lower their exposure and risk for mesothelioma. Of course, some of these people are working to remove asbestos pumps from the public and are still at risk for exposure, even with safety precautions.

Asbestos is easily carried around on the body - it can cling to hair, skin, shoes and clothing. When someone is working to create or manufacture pumps with asbestos in the past, or installing asbestos pumps in ships, homes and buildings, or now, removing these pumps from places, they are exposed to asbestos. In the past, protective measures were not taken and thusly, the diagnosis of mesothelioma is on the rise.

If you, or someone you love has mesothelioma, contact a qualified mesothelioma lawyer to discuss the possibilities of launching a lawsuit against the companies that made or used pumps containing asbestos. Many of the companies knew of the impact asbestos pumps had on health yet ignored the information that protective gear should be worn by workers in order to protect their bottom lines.
