Other TopicsGold Bond Plaster - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks
Since before the 1970s, the National Gypsum Company has been one of the foremost United States manufacturers and distributors of gypsum wallboard products and plasters for interior residential and commercial applications. They are particularly well known for their interior Gold Bond plaster products that have over the years been used in many thousands of homes and workplaces in many different applications. In the past, especially before the 1970s, many of these Gold Bond plasters contained asbestos. Although asbestos is a hazardous substance, potentially dangerous to the health of everyone in its vicinity, National Gypsum used asbestos in their products, most likely because it was affordable, widely available, and acted as a good heat insulation and fire retardant, making it useful in insulation, heating, and a variety of other applications.
Up until the 1970s, companies such as the National Gypsum Company used asbestos in many of their plaster wallboard and insulation products, and as a result, may have exposed many thousands of innocent victims to the life-threatening effects of friable asbestos particles. Once scientists and the public became aware of these dangers of asbestos exposure, legislators, health organizations, and the public put substantial pressure on the manufacturers of asbestos-containing products. Much of this pressure came in the form of claims and lawsuits. During these difficult, combative years, the National Gypsum Company relented and discontinued the manufacture and sales of many of its plasters and other products that contained asbestos as a leading ingredient.
But the irresponsibility of asbestos-peddling companies had already caused widespread, irrevocable damage to individuals, families, and communities. Countless unwary homeowners, construction workers, their families, and thousands of other innocent people began to develop serious asbestos-related medical conditions as a result of exposure to the asbestos-containing products, such as Gold Bond plasters and wall boarding, in their home, school, or place of business. Companies who sold or manufactured asbestos-containing products, like those manufactured by the National Gypsum Company, were the targets of many successful claims and lawsuits by homeowners, workers, and the families of those exposed to asbestos-containing Gold Bond plaster and other asbestos products. These people who had been so wrongly injured fought back against the corporations who did them harm, and these claims are in part responsible for the banning or discontinuation of many asbestos products. Unfortunately, many good people were harmed before anything could be done to save them.
These victims were put at risk when the microscopic particles contained in their Gold Bond plaster and other asbestos-containing products were disturbed by wear and tear, heavy traffic, removal, or renovation. When the dried plaster was broken, asbestos dust would be released into the air and could be aspirated by anyone working or living near to the broken wall and asbestos dust. Once someone breathed these asbestos particles, the particles often, over time, caused lung-scarring, irritation, and eventually lead the victim to develop lung cancer, asbestosis, intestinal cancer, mesothelioma, and other, severe non-cancer illnesses. Because these illnesses take years or decades to develop, many people exposed to asbestos Gold Bond plaster in the 1960s and 1970s are just now presenting symptoms of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related medical illnesses. If you are presenting symptoms of asbestos illnesses, such as coughing or chest pain, or believe you have at some point been exposed to Gold Bond plaster or other asbestos-containing products, please contact an attorney as soon as possible. Seek the advice of a lawyer who is familiar with asbestos-related claims, one who can secure for you and your family the justice you need and deserve.
