In the years preceding the early 1970s, the National Gypsum Company was one of the largest national manufacturers and distributors of gypsum plaster and wallboard products. At the time, the dangers of asbestos had not yet leaked to the public, and many of the products that the National Gypsum Company and similar companies sold contained asbestos as a leading ingredient. One of the National Gypsum Company's most popular products during these decades was Gold Bond Spackle Plaster, a special spackle mix that contractors, handymen, and do-it-yourselfers used to fill cracks and hole in the surface of a wallboard or sheetrock. During its reign as one of the leaders on the National Gypsum Company's list of successful products, thousands of people purchased Gold Bond Spackle Plaster for the construction and renovation of homes, commercial buildings, schools, and offices worldwide.
When the hazards presented by asbestos-containing products finally leaked to the public in the 1970s, a nationwide wave of fear and panic put immense pressure on the manufacturers of asbestos-containing products to discontinue those products that posed a threat to communities everywhere. Many homeowners, construction workers, and others who had been exposed to materials containing asbestos filed lawsuits against companies that manufactured, distributed or sold these products. Consumers and consumer advocacy groups rightly complained that they had not been appropriately warned against the dangers of asbestos and the presence of the hazardous material in the products they purchased for their home, school, or business. Under these influences and others, the National Gypsum company discontinued the manufacture and sales of asbestos Gold Bond Spackle Plaster and many of its other asbestos-containing wallboard plasters and products.
By the time they did this, however, the damage was too far-gone. Thousands of innocent homeowners, construction workers -- countless mothers, fathers, and children -- began to develop severe, life-threatening medical conditions due to their exposure to asbestos-containing products like as Gold Bond Spackle Plaster. After years of fighting burgeoning claims and litigation by consumers and the families of the ill, the National Gypsum Company reorganized itself under the same name, the National Gypsum Company. By doing so, the company tacitly denied the memory of its storied, ugly past by claiming to have been founded in 1993, years after it exposed thousands to asbestos-containing products like Gold Bond Spackle Plaster.
However, the communities and families of the innocent victims struck down by asbestos-related illnesses have not forgotten these tragedies. Nor have they forgiven the industries that put them and their families at risk of developing these diseases, such as mesothelioma. And the damage caused continues to grow each year. The final toll cannot yet be taken on the number of lives stolen by the manufacturers of asbestos-containing products, because thousands more have yet to present the symptoms of these developing illnesses. Every year, ten thousand people die from asbestos-related illnesses, and these numbers are showing no sign of letting up. Thousands of people who have aspirated asbestos particles that infiltrated their homes in Gold Bond and similar products will develop lung cancer, asbestosis, intestinal cancer, heart disease, and mesothelioma as a result of their exposure to asbestos-containing products. Those who have worked with Gold Bond Spackle Plaster and other Gold Bond products should immediately consult a skilled attorney. Do not wait until symptoms present -- contact an attorney today and make sure that the manufacturers of dangerous asbestos products are held responsible for your developing illness.
