Until only very recently, asbestos was one of the most widely used materials in the construction of commercial and residential developments. Asbestos materials were typically applied in homes and workplaces during initial construction or subsequent renovation. Asbestos-containing products such as floor tiles or roofing felt were used anywhere that heating insulation was desirable, such as in walls, ceilings, floors, around boilers and pipes, or on roofs. These asbestos products remained very popular for many decades because they were very affordable, easily acquired and had beneficial fire-retardant properties. Many manufacturers and contractors swore that it was the perfect material for your home.
Only after years and years of use, when the public began to catch on to the dangers posed by asbestos in the 1970s, did legislators and health groups call for a ban on some asbestos products. Many manufacturers of asbestos products, such as the National Gypsum Company, discontinued many of their asbestos-containing products after becoming subject to innumerable lawsuits filed by victimized families, workers, and businesses. Although the pressures exerted on these companies led to the wide discontinuation of many asbestos products, many of the products then installed in homes remain there today. If your home was built before the 1970s, it is likely to contain asbestos products, such as Gold Bond Tar Paper.
Gypsum tarpaper containing asbestos came into high demand in the late 1940s, when a nationwide housing boom created a call for cheap, effective insulation and roofing products. Asbestos roofing materials, such as the popular Gold Bond Tar Paper, were installed during these years in nearly 54 million homes around the nation. In the 1960s, asbestos-containing gypsum materials came into vogue in the commercial development sector. As a result, Gold Bond Tar Paper and similar products were used cover many thousands of commercial buildings, factories, schools, and other public institutions. Ten years later, when awareness of dangers of asbestos exposure began to spread and the threat of wrongful death lawsuits became a reality, National Gypsum Company and others discontinued many asbestos roofing products. But the damage was already done.
Researchers estimate that nearly 10,000 Americans die each year as a result of exposure to asbestos and asbestos containing products like Gold Bond Tar Paper. Many of the victims succumbing now to deadly asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma were exposed many decades ago, when they worked with Gold Bond Tar Paper or lived in a home constructed in part with asbestos materials. Such is the nature of mesothelioma: this disease and others caused by exposure to asbestos may take many years or decades to present symptoms. Sadly, by the time the symptoms of illnesses like mesothelioma present, it is often too late.
Don't wait until you present symptoms to take action! If you have ever worked with Gold Bond Tar Paper, or if you were a construction worker or roofer prior to the mid-1970s, please take immediately steps to protect yourself and your family. Asbestos exposure is extremely dangerous, causing severe, life-threatening illnesses, including lung cancer, asbestosis, mesothelioma, and other potentially fatal non-cancer medical conditions.
