HiTemp Blocks - Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks
The Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation and its successor organizations manufactured and sold many asbestos products. In fact, for the majority of the last century, the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation was the largest producer of asbestos products available on the market. The company produced an array of asbestos products, ranging from industrial and commercial supplies to residential building materials.
Their most widely used and popular category of products was asbestos insulation. Under the trade name HiTemp, the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation and its successors manufactured and distributed insulation products, one of which was the popular HiTemp Block, a brick-shaped mineral and fiber insulation block, which was installed in thousands of homes and workplaces across the nation.
The company that manufactured HiTemp Blocks lauded them for their effective insulating properties, low cost and durability. However, many people - both workers for the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation and consumers - began to suspect there might be something unsafe about the HiTemp Block and its constituent materials.
In the 1960s, Dr. Manusco, who was hired by the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation to oversee compliance with OSHA standards, sent an alarming letter to his colleagues at the company. By this time, countless workers in the factories that produced HiTemp Blocks had succumbed to mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses.
The doctor's letter stated that the company's refusal to adopt a medical oversight program was to blame for its failure to recognize asbestos as the culprit of these deadly illnesses. He implied that an interest in keeping worker compensation benefit costs low was a factor in this negligence. Soon after he implicated asbestos and the corporation in the deaths of these workers, the company ceased its affiliation with Dr. Manusco.
Many years later, the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation was reorganized under the Celotex Corporation name. Despite the decades old warning and indications, the corporation was still manufacturing HiTemp Blocks and other asbestos products and distributing them to contractors and consumers. As a result of the company's failure to properly protect workers and consumers, the Celotex Corporation would soon be the target of innumerable lawsuits, filed by ill workers and the families of workers who had succumbed to an asbestos-related illness.
Many of these lawsuits were successful, as the judges found manufacturers who were aware of the dangers of asbestos continued to produce asbestos-containing products such as HiTemp Blocks. After being exposed to asbestos, many of these innocent victims developed lung cancer, asbestosis or mesothelioma.
These workers were not given the warning they needed and by the time they addressed their developing illness, it was too late. If you have been diagnosed with an illness related to asbestos, you may have legal options for compensation.
