From 1906 and until only recently, the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation and its successor organizations manufactured and sold asbestos products. In fact, for the majority of the last century, the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation was the largest producer of asbestos products available on the market. The company produced an array of asbestos products - from industrial and commercial supplies to residential building materials - but their most widely used and popular category of products was asbestos insulation. Under the trade name HiTemp, the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation and its successors manufactured and distributed insulation products, one of which was the popular HiTemp Block, a brick-shaped, hard mineral and fiber insulation block, which was installed in thousands of homes and workplaces across the nation. The company that manufactured HiTemp Blocks lauded them for their effective insulating properties, low cost, and durability. However, many people - both workers for the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation and consumers - began to suspect that there might be something a bit unsavory about the HiTemp Block and its constituent materials.
In the 1960s, a Dr. Manusco, hired by the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation to oversee compliance with OSHA standards, sent an alarming letter to his colleagues at the company. By this time, countless workers in the factories that produced HiTemp Blocks had succumbed to mesothelioma and other illnesses, and these deaths were occurring at a much higher rate than in a typical worker population. The doctor's letter stated that the company's refusal to adopt a medical oversight program was to blame for its failure to recognize asbestos as the culprit of these deadly illnesses. He implied that an interest in keeping worker compensation benefit costs low was a factor in this negligence. Soon after he implicated asbestos and the corporation in the deaths of these workers, the company ceased its affiliation with Dr. Manusco.
Many years later, the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation had been reorganized under the Celotex Corporation name. Despite the decades old warning and indications, the corporation was still manufacturing HiTemp Blocks and other asbestos products and distributing them to contractors and consumers. As a result of the company's failure to properly protect workers and consumers, the Celotex Corporation would soon be the target of innumerable lawsuits, filed by ill workers and the families of workers who had succumbed to an asbestos-related illness. Many of these lawsuits were successful, as one after another, the judges found that manufacturers who were aware of the dangers of asbestos and continued to produce asbestos containing products, such as HiTemp Blocks, were liable for the injuries to which they have subjected workers and consumers.
However, for many of the workers and consumers exposed to asbestos HiTemp Blocks, there was no court victory that could reverse the effects of their life-threatening, asbestos-related illnesses. After being exposed to asbestos, many of these innocent victims developed lung-cancer, heart disease, asbestosis, or mesothelioma. These workers were not given the warning they needed, and by the time they addressed their developing mesothelioma or lung cancer, it was too late. Don't be a victim of the asbestos industry. If you believe you have been exposed to asbestos, you may be at risk of developing mesothelioma. Don't wait until symptoms present!
