HiTemp Pipecovering

One of the most notorious sources of asbestos in homes and workplaces is HiTemp brand pipecovering. Most of this asbestos-containing insulation was manufactured three or more decades ago, but remains today one of the many causes of asbestos exposure and subsequent asbestos-related illness. In the decades leading up to the 1970s, HiTemp pipecovering was a widely used brand of residential, industrial and commercial building insulation made by the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation. Under the inconspicuous trade name HiTemp Products Incorporated, the Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation manufactured and distributed thousands of tons of asbestos-containing HiTemp pipecovering, which was used in many applications, including basement pipes, boiler room pipes, factory pipes, and all other sort of heating and air-delivery pipe systems. The large-scale manufacture and use of this dangerous product has exposed many thousands of innocent people to HiTemp pipecovering and the asbestos that it contains. Over the last four decades, innumerable innocent people have developed mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses as a result of living or working near HiTemp pipecovering insulation.

The first of these victims on the chain of asbestos exposure are the employees of the factories that manufactured HiTemp pipcovering insulation. These workers ran the machines that were used to produce HiTemp insulation. During manufacture, these machines created an abundance of friable asbestos dust, which the workers would aspirate. Over the course of many years, countless employees of HiTemp Products Inc. developed mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, and other life-threatening asbestos-related medical conditions. Despite the gross number of workers who succumbed each year, nothing was done to protect healthy employees from asbestos dust. Even in the 1960s, after a company doctor warned the corporation about the dangers of asbestos inhalation, the company made no move to discontinue the HiTemp pipecovering product. As a result of this negligence, many hundreds of workers - all with friends and family - died of asbestos-related illnesses.

But in terms of exposures caused by Philip Carey Manufacturing Corporation, company employees comprise only the tip of the iceberg, as it were. Once workers completed the manufacture of a HiTemp product, they then shipped it off to be sold, at which point any do-it-yourselfer or contractor might purchase the product. Once a contracting company begins to install HiTemp insulation in a home, office, or commercial building, every employee of that contractor is at risk of asbestos exposure. In the course of their installation work, these employees must manipulate the insulation in all variety of ways, each of which can allow asbestos fibers to be released into the atmosphere, where they may be inhaled by anyone. The presence of HiTemp pipecovering also puts the homeowner at risk. During installation, renovation, or simply through the course of day-to-day activity, the material may be disturbed, creating a serious health hazard, right in your own home!
