About the Atlantic Dry Dock
In 1964, the Atlantic Marine, Inc. was creates by George W. Gibbs III. At first, the company devoted a 650-acre site to ship repair, specializing in larger ships for the U.S. Navy and other private contractors. They added the Atlantic Dry Dock two years later, in 1966, in order to compliment ship repairs with ship building as well.
The Atlantic Dry Dock was only two miles away from the Atlantic Ocean. An 81-acre lot was developed into the shipyard, which sits at the intersection of the St. John's River and the Intracoastal Waterway. It began to take contracts right away, though workers were sadly forced to work in conditions where asbestos was present. During shipbuilding work, small pieces of asbestos and fibers are easily released into the air, where workers inhale or ingest the bits, leading to sickness and the possibility for mesothelioma.
Over the next few decades, the Atlantic Dry Dock grew and expanded. Two more shipyards were opened up when the company bought out ADDSCO Industries in Mobile, Alabama. This allowed for extra work to be done, more employees to be hired, and more contracts to be acquired by the shipbuilders.
