Mayport Navy Station
If you have ever traveled to Jacksonville, Florida, you may have noticed the miles and miles of intracoastal waterways that are part of the St. John's River. In fact, water seems to be a main attribute for the city in general, which is why it is home to one of the premier naval stations in the nation: Mayport Naval Station. Since it was originally commissioned in 1942, this naval station has been located near the Port of Jacksonville and has been the employer to many, many people who have been exposed to a large amount of asbestos during shipbuilding and repair work at the station.
Shipyards in general are known to be notorious for exposing workers in the past to asbestos, which has led to serious health problems for them. Asbestos was commonly used in ships and repair materials prior to 1975 and has been known to cause a type of cancer known as mesothelioma. This disease presents itself decades after exposure to asbestos, so for many people it comes as a complete surprise. However, by letting your doctor know if you have worked around asbestos in the past, you are letting him know what to look for on your next checkup. Like with any form of cancer, the earlier you detect it, the better your chances of recovery will be.
The Mayport Naval Station, covering 3,409 acres and including an 8,000 foot runway that can accommodate any aircraft in the Department of Defense, is one of the many shipyards in the U.S. to have exposed workers to asbestos in the past. In 1992, the station merged with the Naval Air Station Mayport and went on to employ 14,ppp more active-duty personnel and 1,400 civilians. However, asbestos has been cleared from many workplaces and is not allowed to be present at shipyards anymore, so this merger would not allow any more people to be exposed to asbestos.
If you believe you were exposed to asbestos while working in the past at Mayport Naval Station, it's important that you let your doctor know. If you find that you have mesothelioma as a result of this exposure, you can seek legal help in order to receive compensation for your medical bills and losses. If you know someone who has passed away because of mesothelioma that was a result of asbestos exposure you can seek compensation for your family as well, if you were directly related to the individual.
The Mayport Naval Station currently houses more than two-dozen ships, which includes an aircraft carrier, AEGIS guided-missile cruisers, destroyers, and guided missile frigates. It is one of the busiest seaports in the area and continually takes contracts to service and repair vessels of all shapes and sizes. It also employs more people than most businesses in the area, though the workers of today are less likely to come in contact with asbestos than workers from the past. Still, if you think the workplace may have done you harm, it's important to get checked out by a medical official.
