Asbestos In Shipyards

Puget Sound Bridge Yards

During the 1930's, it had been made known to industrial companies -- those who operate as steel mills, oil refineries and repair shipyards and shipbuilders -- of the danger behind asbestos fibers. Although asbestos is a very useful mineral, researchers found that it could pose grave danger to human health. Nonetheless, asbestos were indiscriminately used by shipyards during the first and second World War. They thought that if they would create a cover up, their use of asbestos wouldn't be known.

In this regard they went wrong; effects of asbestos surface only after decades of last exposure to such substance. It was also in this regard that Puget Sound Bridge Yards had gone wrong. Workers file claim against it for mesothelioma and other asbestos related illnesses.

Puget Sound Bridge Yards

Puget Sound Bridge Yards or Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company has been founded in 1898 and now is permanently closed since 1987. This 18 acre shipyard was located in Seattle, Washington, on Harbor Island. During its operations, Puget Sound Bridge Yards had employed thousands of crews to operate and maintain the shipyard and its vessels. In 1959, Puget Sound Bridge Yards was purchased by Lockheed Corporation, thus, its name had changed to Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company. It had carried the name Lockheed until it closed in 1987.

Currently, the company is still settling disputes for toxic wastes cleanup and compensation claims by workers who got sick from exposure to toxic wastes and asbestos fibers.

Can you get sick with asbestos?

Yes. Not just sick, but very sick. Asbestos is a very dangerous chemical substance that has been used before by construction firms and shipyard makers, most especially fifty years ago when asbestos was not known yet to be dangerous.

Asbestos is deadly when inhaled in large quantities. Yet, only recently that it has been known that inhaling it in small amounts is likewise dangerous, especially when exposure to asbestos is constant; thus, those who were working in construction sites that use asbestos or those who live in building containing large quantities of asbestos are of high risk. They may suffer from mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer.

Are you entitled for reparations?

If you get sick with mesothelioma, it only means one thing: you had worked for a company that manipulates, uses, or has used asbestos in their oil refineries, steel mills, shipyards or repair areas.

With this, you are entitled for reparations. Even if you had worked in a shipyard ages ago as a vessel repair man, you can still claim for damages for getting sick with mesothelioma.

How would you know how much you should get and if you have a valid and strong case against a company? A mesothelioma lawyer is your greatest ally in these trying times. He will assist you with your case and explain every legal remedy available for you. Don't go after the shipyard company yourself since they might offer you a low sum of money to settle the case with you.
