During the Second World War, a concerted attempt was made by the United States to amplify the efforts for combat. These efforts incorporated manufacturing mass amounts of warships to provide for the conflict. For many of the shipyard personnel serving to manufacture these ships, working with asbestos was an every day duty. At the time, people didn't realize the implications of working with asbestos as we do now. Todd Shipyard was one of the many active shipyards manufacturing vessels with asbestos.
The tiny fibers that can be released by asbestos are easily inhaled when workers are not using a face mask. These miniature fibers can easily lodge themselves withing the mesothelial linings of the lungs, heart, and abdomen. Once they cause swelling and irritation, they eventually can turn cancerous.
This form of cancer is called mesothelioma, and there is a direct association with asbestos exposure and this illness. Mesothelioma is almost always incurable, and does not respond to classic cancer treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy.
All levels of asbestos exposure, even the most minuscule, can place people in jeopardy for contracting mesothelioma cancer and other asbestos-related illnesses. Asbestos strands easily cling to skin, clothing, and hair, and were likely brought home to family members. Families of Todds Shipyard workers are amongst those that have contracted asbestos-related illnesses.
Mesothelioma is considered by experts as an uncommon type of cancer that accounts for only 1 percent of cancer-related fatalities each year. While the cancer type may be uncommon, there are roughly 2,000 new cases registered each year.
If you or a member of your family has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, it is helpful to contact an asbestos lawyer to assist you in organizing a lawsuit against those responsible for subjecting you to asbestos.
