Dr. Arthur T. Skarin
Associate Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School, Arthur T. Skarin, MD, received his medical degree in 1961 from the State University of New York at Buffalo and received post-graduate training in internal medicine at Buffalo's Millard Fillmore Teaching Hospital. In 1970, he joined the staff of the Brigham and Women's Hospital/Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts where he served as clinical director of the hematology laboratory from 1970 to 1998 and as medical director from 1975 to 2006.
As a researcher in the Department of Medical Oncology, Dr. Skarin, who specializes in thoracic cancer, has concentrated on the areas of lung cancer screening and prevention studies, diagnosis, staging, and management of benign and malignant tumors of the thorax, multi-disciplinary treatment of mesothelioma, lung cancer, thymus and mediastinum tumors, and pleural effusion, and lung cancer management. Skarin has been involved in Stage I, II and III clinical trials involving patients with various types of cancer. Skarin is particularly interested in the development of new and alternative treatments for cancers such as mesothelioma, including tumor vaccines, angiogenesis, and other therapies.
A fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the 1996 Teacher of the Year award recipient at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Dr. Skarin has authored and co-authored many papers related to his research, many of which have appeared in publications such as the Journal for Clinical Oncology, and has more than one dozen books to his credit, including many that are used as handbooks for students and doctors at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
