Bio

For Charles R Mulligan Jr., M.D., his recent appointment as a thoracic surgeon at Christiana Care's Helen F. Graham Cancer Center in Newark, Delaware, is just the latest in a long line of career achievements. But Mulligan's dedication to the treatment of mesothelioma, lung cancer and mediastinal tumors was only strengthened by his long, prestigious military career, both on the battlefield and in the operating room.

After completing a fellowship in thoracic surgery at the Medical College of Virginia in 1999, Mulligan served two tours as chief of Thoracic Surgery at the 28th Combat Support Hospital during Operation Iraqi Freedom in Baghdad. His military tenure was capped off by more than a decade spent as chief of the General Thoracic Surgery Section at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

This multi-faceted education and work experience has provided Mulligan with a unique perspective on the care and treatment of mesothelioma, as well as for lung cancer and thoracic oncology and trauma in general. Mulligan and his fellow surgeons encourage medical education and collaborative research. In addition, they regularly participate in national and international studies and clinical trials.

With Mulligan's background and interest in thoracic surgery, patients are provided with a wide array of effective surgical options, many of which are minimally invasive. Mulligan has written five scholarly articles, three of which discuss the prognostic factors and staging mechanisms for lung cancer. His works appear in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Cancer Epidemiological Biomarkers and Prevention and Chest Journal.
