Dr. Peter W. Barrett
Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Intensive Care Unit at Yale New Haven Hospital and Assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine, Peter W. Barrett, MD received his medical degree from St. George's University School of Medicine. Upon graduating from this Caribbean institution, he completed his residency in general surgery at the Morristown General Hospital in New Jersey and completed an additional residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital. Dr. Barrett also completed a fellowship in cardiopulmonary transplantation at Yale. In addition, his post-doctoral work includes a degree in Healthcare Management from Harvard University. He became board certified in surgery in 1991 and thoracic surgery in 1995.
Dr. Barrett also oversaw clinical instruction for the State University of New York at Syracuse and served practices in Easton, Pennsylvania. Dr. Barrett became Assistant Clinical Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina in Myrtle Beach in 1998, and after a short stay there, he became Forensic Consultant at American Medical Forensic Specialist, Inc. in Berkeley, California. From 1999-2002, he also worked as a cardiothoracic surgeon with Great Lakes Surgical Specialists in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Dr. Barrett lists his clinical interests as thoracic surgery, lung cancer surgery, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) surgery, aortic surgery, Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD), mechanical assist devices, thorascopic surgery, esophageal cancer surgery, surgery for myasthenia gravis, airway stenting and thorascopic sympathectomy for palmar sweating. The types of cancer Dr.Barrett treats include lung, esophagus, mesothelioma, squamous cell and thymomas cancers.
Research interests indicated by Dr. Barrett focus on the clinical standard of care for cardiac and thoracic surgical patients and also include evidence based medicine for cardiothoracic surgery. Dr. Barrett has contributed articles to a number of journals both as an author and co-author.
