Bio
Richard Battafarano, M.D., considers his primary contribution to the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center to be “surgical staging and resection of [a patient’s] tumors.”
The hospital boasts what Battafarano refers to as “the most advanced, state-of-the-art care available.” “We use a minimally invasive approach wherever we can,” he explains.
The Division of Thoracic Surgery treats all diseases of the chest, including malignant mesothelioma. The hospital’s thoracic oncology program even operates the Center for Mesothelioma and Asbestos-Related Diseases. In addition to minimally invasive surgeries such as lung volume reduction surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are also provided to cancer patients at the Greenebaum Cancer Center.
Battafarano became the chair of the Division of Thoracic Surgery in 2007. His clinical interests include surgery for lung cancer and other chest tumors as well as cancers that have spread to the lung from other areas of the body.
My goal is to provide excellent service to patients and referring physicians for a full range of diseases of the chest.
Since joining the team at the University of Maryland, he has contributed to a number of research endeavors focusing on surgical procedures and the management of related complications. He also serves as an associate professor of surgery at the university’s medical school.
