Bio

Richard L. Kradin, M.D., is an associate pathologist and physician at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School.

Specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine, Kradin is interested in pulmonology and autopsy pathology. He treats dyspnea, interstitial lung diseases, kidney cancer, lung cancer and pulmonary fibrosis.

Some of his research interests include infectious disease, pulmonary immunity and asbestos-related disease. One asbestos-related condition that is a particular interest of Kradin's is mesothelioma, a rare cancer often associated with heavy but short-term asbestos exposure. The most common type is pleural mesothelioma, which develops in the lining of the lungs.

His primary focus for mesothelioma involves diagnosing and managing the disease. In a 2006 report, Kradin evaluated and acknowledged the increase in diffuse malignant mesothelioma cases, which is an unusual growth pattern for the cancer.

After finishing his education at Jefferson Medical College in 1976, Kradin completed residencies at MGH and Pennsylvania Hospital. He returned to MGH for his fellowship, where he is now director of infectious disease pathology.

Kradin is also part of the department of medicine and department of pathology at MGH. He is board certified in internal medicine, anatomic pathology and pulmonary disease.
