Dr. Scott N. Gettinger

Bio

When Scott Gettinger, M.D., was named to the staff at the Yale Cancer Center, he created a clear and ambitious goal for his practice.

Gettinger joined the staff as a board-certified medical oncologist at the Smilow Cancer Hospital, a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. Working within the thoracic oncology program, Gettinger treats a variety of cancers that originate in the thoracic cavity, such as chest wall tumors, lung cancer, mediastinal tumors, thymomas and malignant mesothelioma.

His role at the cancer center is to work "closely with the Head and Neck Cancer Program to develop multidisciplinary approaches to treat patients with locally advanced disease and to develop innovative treatment regimens incorporating novel targeted agents."

Heavily involved with internal medicine, Gettinger has contributed to a number of clinical trials exploring lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. His clinical trials have explored the effects of the prominent chemotherapy drugs pemetrexed, Docetaxel and carboplatin, among other types of treatment.

Gettinger's other research has included clinical trial design; novel therapeutics for the treatment of lung and other thoracic cancers; and biomarkers, which are specific proteins found in a patient's blood that may indicate the presence or absence of a certain illness.

Gettinger's medical practice was launched in 1999 when he graduated from medical school at the State University of New York at Brooklyn College. He later completed a consecutive residency and fellowship at the Beth-Israel Medical Center in New York City. He has served at Yale University since 2005 and is also an assistant professor of Medicine and Medical Oncology.

Publications

Gettinger's 14 publications deal with targeted thearpy, non-small cell lung cancer and novel forms of chemotherapy. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and Clinical Cancer Research, among other scientific publications.
