Dr. Walter J. Scott
Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Philadelphia's acclaimed Fox Chase Cancer Center, Walter J. Scott, MD, received his medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, in 1981. He completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center as well as fellowships in cardiovascular physiology and cardiothoracic surgery. Dr. Scott is board certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery.
Dr. Scott is skilled in using minimally invasive surgical techniques, including video-assisted techniques, to treat lung and other thoracic cancers. He was the first surgeon in the Philadelphia area to investigate the use of ultrasound bronchoscopy (endobronchial ultrasound) to evaluate lymph nodes in the chest, potentially eliminating the need for more invasive surgery. Dr. Scott is also skilled at robotic surgery.
Along with other doctors at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Dr. Scott takes a team approach to the treatment of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mediastinal tumors, Pancoast tumors and tumors of the chest wall and other thoracic cancers like mesothelioma. He has participated in numerous clinical trials, serving as the lead investigator in many of the studies. This involvement in clinical research has prompted him to author or co-author numerous scientific articles and presentations. He has also penned a book for cancer patients and their families.
Dr. Scott is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He was recently named to Philadelphia Magazine's list of Top Doctors in Thoracic Surgery for 2008.
