Aftermath of the Attacks

No matter who you talk to, you can be sure that each person will most likely know what they were doing the morning of September 11, 2001. This horrific day has gone down in history known mainly as 9/11. There were several attacks done to the United States of America on that fatal morning. Most everyone watched their televisions unable to take their eyes off of the screen as the events unfolded before their eyes. The news crews caught live, the second attack on the World Trade Center.

Even thought it is years after the attacks, the world still feels the aftermath of those unfortunate events. The suicide attackers changed the lives of all Americans forever. No one expected any of this to happen and no one was prepared for what would come on that day. That morning there were a total of 19 terrorists that synchronized their attacks on the USA. Once the attacks were done, the horror got even worse. When the twin towers of the World Trade Center collapsed, the world watched in disbelief as people were literally jumping out of the windows from the towers, plunging to their deaths. It was a sight that none of us will ever forget.

It wasn't till later that people began to question about asbestos being used in the building of the World Trade Center. There were literally thousands of people cleaning through the rubble of the collapsed towers and many were concerned about their health in the aftermath. For more information about health issues associated with clean up in the aftermath, please see The World Trade Center - Cleanup. Everyone was informed that the North Tower of the World Trade Center was built with asbestos up to the 40th floor and that meant that everyone in New York were all taking in asbestos with the ash that covered the city. For more information about asbestos in construction of the World Trade Center, please see The World Trade Center - Asbestos use in Construction.

It was said that the total casualties of September 11, 2001 came to a total of 2,999. That did not take into affect the people that were going to be suffering in the aftermath for years to come. The health issues alone were of great concern to everyone as they continued to clean up the city. It took years to get the city back up and running. There were literally thousands of tons of toxic spread all over the city that contained more than 2,500 contaminants. The toxic debris was made of up such things as asbestos, construction debris, glass and other fibers, lead, mercury and nonfibrous material.

It was also said that there were undetermined levels of such things as dioxin and PAH which came from the fires that had burned for more than 3 months. It has been said that some of the materials and toxins that were spread around were carcinogenic while others could trigger such health problems as the break down or deterioration of the heart, kidney, liver and nervous system as well.

Sadly the people who lost their lives in the attacks were not the only ones that suffered. They left behind family and friends. The workers and rescuers that worked so hard to try and save lives on that day have been stuck with debilitating illnesses that have been directly linked to the debris that they were exposed to from the aftermath. Frank Macri, an officer of the NYPD died from lung cancer that had spread through his entire body. His family strongly believes that this was due to the exposure he had when the towers went down. It is known that his family has filed suit to get line of duty death benefits as they believe his death was directly related to the 9/11 attacks. They are still waiting on the ruling for this. His story is just one of many. There are many people that are suffering still, in the aftermath of the World Trade Center Attacks.

On May 24, 2007 there was the first death that was actually linked directly to the 9/11 aftermath. It was proven that the toxins from the debris caused Felicia Dunn-Jones to die of lung cancer. Since then, more and more deaths are being tied directly to the September 11, 2001 attacks. These names as well as many others are to be included on the memorial wall to be brought out in 2009. It has also been said that the residents as well as students and office workers are suffering from health issues from the aftermath of the twin towers collapsing. For more information about health problems associated with 9/11, please see The World Trade Center - Ongoing Health Problems.

It is a long journey for all of those who lived through the events and for some they will always have a hard time going forward. They will have to live with the physical and emotional scars for the rest of their lives and for some they will have the health problems that will haunt them forever if it doesn't kill them first. For many the aftermath will always go on as their health will be a constant reminder of what they lived through.
