Mesothelioma Events Bring Attention to the Cancer

This May, the Pacific Meso Center will receive funds through Angen’s Breakaway from Cancer Grand Prix Fundraiser, which will be applied to their various research attempts.
Additionally, the center will be holding a conference to discuss its unique approach to mesothelioma treatment. Advocacy projects like these are bringing light to the cancer and striving to construct a brighter future for patients.
The Dana Point Community Cycling Foundation has scheduled their Dana Point Grand Prix for May 1, 2011. In addition to the cycling event, the foundation is hosting the Breakaway Walk, which begins at 3 p.m. The walk, starting at the Cancer Survivor Tent, will include a Celebration of Life and is open to cancer survivors, their caretakers, loved ones and doctors. Banners, t-shirts and medals will be made and distributed during the festivities. The Pacific Meso Center has been named one of the primary beneficiaries for this USA Cycling NRC-sanctioned event.
The Pacific Meso Center at the Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) maintains a distinctive approach to treatment. Innovated by Dr. Robert Cameron, the Director of the Mesothelioma Research for UCLA and the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the West Los Angeles Veterans’ Administration Medical Center, the PHLBI strives to avoid removing a patient’s lung.
Instead the PHLBI supports lung-sparing therapies that remove equivalent amounts of cancer cells. They employ pleurectomy/decortication techniques, which aim to remove the pleura and make it easier for the lung to expand as intended. They deem this procedure to do less harm to a patient than the traditional extra-pleural pneumonectomy, which extracts the entire lung as well as the coverings of the heart, diaphragm and pericardium.
Their approach to surgical cancer management will be the focus of a May 21 conference, the UCLA Seminar on Lung-Sparing Therapies for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma. This seminar, which is set to take place at the Sheraton Delfina in Santa Monica, will be the first of its kind.
