Immediately after finishing consecutive residencies in general and cardiothoracic surgery, Mario Gasparri joined the staff at the Froedtert Medical College of Wisconsin, where he has spent 10 years on the thoracic surgery team. Gasparri also serves on the surgical team at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, a teaching hospital affiliated with the medical college, and the Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Gasparri has treated a wide range of chest-based diseases, including lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma, with a special emphasis on minimally invasive surgery. His experiences with minimally invasive procedures include thoracoscopy and laser-operated procedures. At Froedtert, these procedures are often paired with highly targeted radiation. Gasparri is also an expert in diagnostic procedures like electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy.

EPP for Mesothelioma

Gasparri’s experience includes many complex surgeries, including chest wall reconstruction, lung transplantation and extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) for malignant mesothelioma. The Froedtert Hospital is one of the few facilities in Wisconsin that performs this radical, lung-removing operation. Gasparri is also familiar with emergency care. During his six-year general surgery residency at the Henry Ford Hospital, he completed a one-year fellowship with a focus on critical care.

At the 2011 conference of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, Gasparri was on a presentation team for a study outlining the combination of chemotherapy, high-dose radiation therapy and pulmonary resection. Although he is a surgeon, Gasparri works closely with Froedtert doctors who specialize in other disciplines, meeting with the tumor board team twice each month to evaluate each patient’s case from a number of specialized perspectives. This allows each patient to receive a customized, comprehensive treatment plan. The facility offers a number of adjuvant treatments and therapies to mesothelioma patients, including pre-operative rehabilitation, new chemotherapeutic options and a smoking cessation program.

Gasparri is board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery and thoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
