Potential asbestos exposure, what should I do?

Posted by Individual with Asbestos Exposure | Sep 22, 2025
Found out I might have been exposed to asbestos years ago when working construction. Should I be doing anything right away or just wait and see if I get symptoms?

If you believe you were exposed, notify your primary care doctor and request a baseline chest X-ray or CT scan, even if you have no symptoms. Keep a detailed record of where and when the exposure occurred. If symptoms develop later, such as a persistent cough, chest pain, or shortness of breath, see a specialist promptly.

My advice is not to wait. Let your doctor know about the exposure so it’s documented in your medical records. That way your care team decides the best next steps. No amount of asbestos is safe. I’m grateful that the early detection gave me the chance to begin treatment quickly when I was diagnosed.
