How do you balance your own needs as a mesothelioma caregiver?

Posted by Wife of Mesothelioma Patient | Sep 15, 2025
My husband has recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma. I know there will be a lot of help I will need to give him but I also know this diagnosis is going to impact me as well. How have you balanced your own needs to cope with helping your loved one?

The way I balance my own needs while helping my husband is to make sure that I make some time for myself too. For example, I like to exercise, so I get up very early to exercise. I make time to do yard work and tend my garden. I also memorize Bible verses like "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." These activities help me keep a positive attitude and maintain my health. If we don't take care of ourselves, we can't take care of our loved ones.

Caregiving is emotionally demanding. Build a support network for yourself, take breaks, and consider counseling. Joining a caregiver-specific support group can help you share experiences and avoid burnout.
