Where do I start as a veteran looking to file a mesothelioma claim?

Posted by Veteran with Mesothelioma | Sep 12, 2025
I served in the Navy and believe my mesothelioma was caused by asbestos exposure during my time in the service. I know there are benefits and compensation available but I have no idea where to start.

Start by gathering service records and any documentation of asbestos exposure. You will need to provide medical documentation of your current cancer diagnosis and the medical nexus or connection to asbestos as the cause. The second element is providing information about how, when and where you were exposed to asbestos to “prove” that the majority of your exposure occurred on active duty. File an Intent to File a Disability Claim with the VA to serve as a time stamp for back-paid benefits once your claim is approved. Connect with your local Veterans Service Office to assist you in filing, and you can contact The Mesothelioma Center and we can help you with the asbestos exposure information. Many veterans also have legal rights to pursue compensation outside the VA system, which can be handled in parallel.
