Exclusive Content
Dr. Marcelo DaSilva addresses the emotional impact of a mesothelioma diagnosis, emphasizing that it is not a death sentence and that there is reason for hope. He highlights treatment options, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and prehab to prepare patients for surgery. Dr. DaSilva also discusses his program’s patient-centered approach to care, which focuses on treating the whole person and supporting their family, rather than just the disease itself.
So most of the patients when they get the diagnosis of mesothelioma they think it's a death sentence. It is not. Get that out of your mind. We have options, we can treat you. So I think the most important thing for patients once they determine they have mesothelioma is hope, a message of hope. You have to be hopeful that we can treat you because once that happens if there's hope in the equation, anything's possible. We can treat you with chemo, immunotherapy, prehab. We get you ready to have the surgery. Remember, you're part of the team. You are part of what we're going to be helping. It's just not the disease process. I usually say we don't treat mesothelioma. We treat patients and people and families with mesothelioma and that's difference that we offer in our program.
