How Do Clinical Trials Benefit Mesothelioma Patients?
Patient advocate, Karen Selby, encourages mesothelioma patients to seek clinical trials that may extend their life expectancy.
[MUSIC PLAYING] Clinical trials are a way for physicians to test drugs to see if a patient will have a better prognosis or life expectancy when dealing with a diagnosis of mesothelioma. I typically encourage folks to look into the options of clinical trials if it's offered for them. Usually with mesothelioma, there's not going to be a time where a physician is going to say, oh, we're going to offer you this clinical trial, but you're going to get the sugar pill. The idea of the clinical trial is to provide a medication that's going to help them. They may or may not get the additional trial drug, but they're still going to always get standard of care. So at no time will they ever be getting no treatment at all. So I do encourage patients to look into the options. There are a lot of things coming down the pike that we have some preliminary data on that is showing good hope for a long life expectancy. So there are some trials out there that I do encourage patients to look into. [MUSIC PLAYING]
