He discusses the emotional strain loved ones may experience and encourages patients to avoid navigating the illness alone. Dr. DaSilva emphasizes that support from family, friends and the community is an important part of the overall treatment experience.
Family members have such an important role in patients with mesothelioma. I usually say when someone has mesothelioma the whole family is sick. The whole family is ill. The grandchildren, the wives, the spouses, they feel the same pressure, sometimes depression of the diagnosis. So I said it's so important. I tell my patients this is not the time to fly solo alone. You need to get all your help that you can get. Friends, family, church, community. This is the time to get people around. Let it go of I can't do this by myself attitude. Get help in the community and the family comes in and quite often I see daughters and sons and they come and says no he's going to live with me. I'm all in with this and then I know for sure and I tell my patients the best treatment you have is right here with you. It's your family support.
